Most of our reactive clients Found us after one bad salon visit

You've probably been told your dog is "too difficult." That you should just shave them down. That you need to sedate them next time. That the salon "isn't equipped" anymore.

Almost every reactive dog we groom started with one of those conversations. And almost every one of them ends up sleeping through their fourth or fifth appointment, no sedation, no muzzle, no drama.

It isn't magic. It's slow. It's quiet. It's one dog at a time. It's letting your pup watch us for ten minutes before we ever pick up a brush. It's stopping the second they tap out and then going again the next week.

If you've already tried "just trying harder" — try slower instead. That's all we do.

How we work with anxious dogs

The methodology, step by step.

This isn't a "service tier" you check at booking. It's how we groom every dog who needs it — at no extra cost.

Free 15-min intro call

Before booking, we get on the phone and talk through your dog's triggers, history, and what's worked. No groom, no charge.

Slow van introduction

First visit: we park, open the door, let your dog watch from a safe distance. They approach us — not the other way around.

Treat-paced everything

Lick mat with peanut butter on the table. Treats at every tool change. We work with what motivates your specific dog.

Pressure-free permission

If your dog turns their head away three times, we stop. No "just one more pass." That's how trust gets broken.

Quiet equipment

Quieter cordless clippers, dialed-down dryer, fewer tool changes. Less stimulus, less reactivity.

Partial grooms OK

If session 1 only gets us through a bath and brush, that's fine. We bank that win and rebook in two weeks for the rest.

No muzzle by default

We don't muzzle reactive dogs unless you ask us to. Muzzling without consent breaks trust. We use distance and pacing instead.

You can stay

Some dogs settle better with their human nearby. You're welcome to sit in the van or right outside it. Just no phone calls — we want your voice to stay calm too.

Pricing

Standard Full Groom pricing. No "difficult dog" surcharge.

Step Price
Free intro call 15 min, by phoneFree
First session 30–60 min, may not include a full groom$95
Subsequent grooms Standard Full Groom pricing by size$95–$145
Two-visit split If we need to break a groom across two daysNo extra charge

Some salons charge a $20–$50 "difficult dog" fee. We do not. The whole reason you're here is because your dog needs more time — penalizing that defeats the point.

Perfect for

If any of these sound like your dog, please call us before you give up.

We've groomed every variation of "too anxious to groom." Almost all of them get better. Some take 2 sessions. Some take 8. We have the patience for either.

  • Rescue dogs with unknown or rough history
  • Dogs who shake, pant, drool, or hide before a groom
  • Dogs who've been "fired" by another salon
  • Dogs who've been recommended sedation grooming
  • Dogs reactive to clippers, dryers, or being lifted
  • Dogs reactive to other dogs in the salon environment
  • Dogs who freeze, snap, or air-snap when handled

What to expect

The first session is for trust. The second is for the haircut.

  1. Phone intake

15-minute call. Tell us what scares your dog, what's worked, what hasn't, and what a "win" would look like. Free, no obligation.

  2. Slow first session

We may only get a bath and a brush done — or even less. That's a win. The goal is your dog leaving calmer than they arrived.

  3. Debrief and plan

We text you a brief: what worked, what we want to try next time, and what we recommend you practice at home before then.

  4. Build the routine

Most reactive dogs are dramatically calmer by session 3 or 4. We hold the same time slot, the same approach, every visit. Predictability is the medicine.

What anxious-dog parents say

"I cried a little tbh."

★★★★★

"Ok so I was super nervous because our rescue Bandit basically loses his mind at our old groomer — like screaming, peeing on the table, the whole deal — and I almost cancelled twice. But Sarah just kinda quietly set up in the driveway and let him watch her through the window for like 10 minutes before she even touched him. By the end he was leaning into her. We didn't hear a single yelp the whole time. He came back smelling amazing and immediately passed out on the couch. I cried a little tbh. Booking the next one already."

"Bella is terrified of the salon. Sarah pulled up, set up in the driveway, and Bella didn't even shake once. Best groom she's ever had. Booking forever."

Jennifer M. · Owner of Bella the Shih Tzu
★★★★★

"Our vet had recommended sedation grooming for Theo because he'd bite at the salon. Three sessions with Sarah and he hasn't snapped once. He still doesn't LOVE it, but he stands. He breathes. He's not in panic mode. We have our normal dog back."

FAQ

What reactive-dog parents ask us.

What if my dog has bitten before?

Please tell us on the intake call — we don't reject dogs with bite history, but we plan differently. We may use a muzzle on early visits (with your consent and treats through it), more space, and a partial-groom approach. We've worked with several bite-history dogs successfully.

Do you use sedation or pheromones?

We don't administer sedatives — that's between you and your vet. We do use Adaptil pheromone spray in the van by default, and we're happy to coordinate with your vet if they've prescribed something pre-groom.

What if my dog refuses to even enter the van?

Then we don't make them. Some dogs work up to it over 2–3 visits with just driveway exposure. That's still progress and we still book follow-ups.

Can my dog be groomed at home instead of the van?

For some severely reactive dogs, yes — bath and brush in your bathroom or backyard. We charge the same as the van session. Talk to us on the intake call.

How long does it take to "fix" a reactive dog?

We don't aim to "fix" — we aim to lower their stress floor every session. Most clients see meaningful improvement by session 3, comfortable grooming by session 5–6, and full calm by session 8 or so. Some get there faster.

What does Fear-Free Certified actually mean?

It's a real third-party certification (~50 hours of coursework) on reading stress signals, low-stress handling, and never working through fear. Different from "we love dogs" — it's a methodology with tested checkpoints.
